POLAR - Gallery Exhibition

Contextural is a not-for-profit community of fibre artists created to support each other in the production of contemporary fibre-based work. Based in Calgary Canada, the group’s mission is to encourage artistic development of its members through collaborative workspaces, professional development, and exhibitions of new work.

Contextural has found a voice within the Calgary dynamic arts communities by coordinating an annual self-directed summer residency program in conjunction with Alberta University of the Arts, providing bimonthly critique opportunities of members works and exhibiting group shows at numerous venues. Contextural member artists actively promote and encourage the appreciation of fibre as a recognized contemporary art medium. Contextural members come to the group from diverse backgrounds and the processes and materials utilized within the pieces in each group exhibition are as varied as the members themselves. Through specialty techniques like lace making, wet felting, hand stitching and silk screening, each member brings their unique perspective when interpreting each exhibition theme.
