Dear Members and Friends,
As 2024 comes to a close, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your engagement, encouragement, and continued support of the Kimberley Arts Council – Centre 64. This year has been full of both remarkable achievements and daunting challenges, but through it all, I have held onto my passion for our mission: enhancing the artistic culture of our community and making the arts inviting and accessible for everyone.
Financial & Programmatic Highlights
One of my primary goals this year was to maintain financial stability while ensuring the centre remains a thriving hub for creativity. We succeeded in:
Protecting Key Savings: We did not have to break the GICs set aside the previous year, preserving $130,000 that can now be invested in youth and children’s programming—or wherever the board and membership see fit.
Expanding Inclusivity: We adapted our programming to generate sufficient revenue to cover operational costs, guided by the principle that public funding should benefit the widest possible range of community members.
Survey Results & Community Engagement: We conducted an extensive survey and received an outstanding level of community response, providing clear direction on what Kimberley residents want. Your feedback will shape the Kimberley Arts Council’s strategic planning to ensure our programs remain aligned with community interests.
However, implementing change often encounters resistance. My intention was to clarify the “why” behind each shift and collaborate with everyone on making Centre 64 a stronger, more inclusive space. Sadly, this met with unexpected levels of opposition, leading to many roadblocks and, at times, personal hardship.
Acknowledging Adversity
I have faced ongoing harassment, vandalism (including my car being keyed), and even covert filming—experiences no one should endure. Despite these trials, I remained steadfast in carrying out my duties with respect and care for our community. It is my sincere hope that the strong Respectful Workplace and HR policies we introduced continue to be upheld, ensuring that future leadership and staff have the support they need to work without fear of retaliation and intimidation.
Strengthening Our Cultural Impact
A highlight of my tenure was pivoting to a more museum-style gallery model, enabling culturally relevant and thought-provoking exhibits:
January’s “Identity” Exhibit: A deep dive into personal and collective identity.
May’s “Red Dress Exhibition” (on loan from the Canadian Museum of Human Rights): An opportunity to recognize the experiences of Indigenous women and collaborate respectfully with the local Ktunaxa Nation.
Gratitude for Our Dedicated Team
Former Staff: Thank you to Felicia Green and Rachel Aube for their tireless work under challenging circumstances.
Current Program Director & Curator, John Stafford: has been instrumental in maintaining continuity; may the centre continue to flourish under his expertise.
Students Imogen & Sarah: These exceptional young leaders developed successful summer programs (including theatre camp) and took on diverse responsibilities. Their talents bode well for the future of Kimberley and beyond.
Valerie Mercredi: Our dedicated janitor, ensuring every space at Centre 64 is clean and welcoming.
Louise Large: A key pillar as bookkeeper and keeper of institutional knowledge.
Cinda Gibson: Our harassment prevention officer and developer of crucial HR protocols.
Greg Fisher: Business consultant funded through a Columbia Basin Trust grant, who helped chart a path for financial viability.
I also want to thank Sharon and Joseph Cross, who brought honesty and integrity to the board and continue to remain deeply involved in our community.
Commending FLIX & Community Programming
Special appreciation goes to Corynn Gammon and the FLIX Committee for their imaginative film programming—Tuesday night features, Sunday children’s matinees, teen movie nights, and double features. This successful initiative exemplifies how community-based ideas can strengthen our arts centre.
Ongoing Improvements
Building on HR Success: I urge everyone involved to maintain and strengthen the Respectful Workplace policies introduced this year. This sets the foundation for a culture where staff, volunteers, and visitors feel safe and valued.
Help Us Grow: We encourage you to renew your membership, invite your friends to join, or volunteer for upcoming events. Your ongoing participation is vital for keeping our programs diverse, inclusive, and financially sustainable.
Final Thanks
I extend my heartfelt thanks to every community member, artist, volunteer, and patron who made this year possible. Your engagement—be it through attendance, donations, or simply offering words of support—has been invaluable.
May the road ahead bring continued growth, open-minded engagement, and shared joy in the power of the arts.
With sincere gratitude,
Kerri-Jo Buckman 2024 Executive Director Kimberley Arts Council – Centre 64
